Charles L. Gilbert, FSA, FCIA, CFA, CERA is president and founder of Nexus Risk Management providing advanced risk management solutions to financial institutions globally. Mr. Gilbert works with several insurance and reinsurance companies worldwide to implement and execute dynamic hedging programs, Asset Liability Management and Enterprise Risk Management.
Mr. Gilbert has been actively involved in managing risks associated with equity based guarantees for over ten years including working with one of the first insurance companies to implement dynamic hedging, serving on industry task forces and conducting research for both the Society of Actuaries and Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Mr. Gilbert was also responsible for launching one of the first dynamic hedging initiatives for a major actuarial consulting firm in 2000. Mr. Gilbert has made significant contributions to the field of Enterprise Risk Management that have served to advance the practice in this area. He holds the Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst designation from the Society of Actuaries. Through a number of joint ventures Mr. Gilbert executes ALM strategies and portfolio optimization for asset management clients, conducts on-going research and provides training.
Previously, Mr. Gilbert was the leader of the Asset Liability Management initiative for Tillinghast - Towers Perrin in North America and was also responsible for building the dynamic hedging initiative for the firm and heading this globally. Prior to joining Tillinghast, Mr. Gilbert was Head of Asset Liability Management and Corporate Actuary at ING Life where he was responsible for Asset Liability Management, as well as the valuation, pricing and financial management for investment products. He developed innovative strategies to immunize the interest rate risk exposure on universal life and other life products and researched various ways to manage the risk associated with investment guarantees on variable annuities and segregated funds. Other past work experience has included US and Canadian taxation, valuation and financial management. Mr. Gilbert has over 25 years of experience in the life insurance industry and has trained over 1,000 ALM practitioners, regulators, rating agency analysts and senior management on risk management worldwide.
Mr. Gilbert graduated cum laude from York University and has an honours B. A. in mathematics. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is currently chairperson of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries Working Group on Asset Liability Management.
Mr. Gilbert recently served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Society of Actuaries, general officer of the Society of Actuaries Finance and ERM Examination Track and member of the International Actuarial Association Task Force on Financial Economics. He is a past chairperson of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries Committee on Investment Practice, past secretary of the Society of Actuaries Investment Section Council, past treasurer of the Society of Actuaries Risk Management Section Council, past member of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries Practice Standards Council, past member of the Society of Actuaries Finance Practice Advancement Committee, past member of the Society of Actuaries Risk Management Task Force, past representative for both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries on the International Actuarial Association Financial Risks Committee, past chairperson of the Society of Actuaries Task Force on ALM Principles, past chairperson of the Society of Actuaries Examination Committees for Course 8 Investments and Financial Economic Theory, and previously served as a director of the Board of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
Jim Gilligan, MBA is vice president of Nexus Risk Management responsible for business development and strategic planning. Mr. Gilligan engages with insurance industry executives, regulators and rating agencies to assess strategy, capital and risk management, governance and key challenges facing insurers.
Mr. Gilligan served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross Life Insurance Company of Canada from 2000 to 2016 where he oversaw a seven-fold growth in top line premium and assets under management. Mr. Gilligan was responsible for all executive and operational activities of Blue Cross, was an active member of the Board of Directors and maintained solid relationships with shareholders, distributors, Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, provincial regulators, reinsurance partners, investment managers and rating agencies. He was also responsible for the development, manufacture and management of Life and Disability Income products, managing the capital position of company, implementation of the enterprise risk management framework, management of investment portfolios related to backing of liabilities, regulatory capital and free capital and building a strong actuarial team primarily through internal development including professional support and coaching.
Previously, Mr. Gilligan was Director, National Marketing and Communications for PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was the first marketing leader in Canada for PricewaterhouseCoopers responsible for communications and media relations. Prior to joining PricewaterhouseCoopers (at that time Coopers & Lybrand), Mr. Gilligan was Vice President of PHH Corporation where his responsibilities included business and product development, marketing and strategic planning.
Other past work experience has included business and financial analysis and serving as an officer in the US Navy.
Mr. Gilligan has a BSc in Economics from Villanova University and MBA in Finance from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Todd D. Doersch, MBA is Managing Director of Nexus Risk Management in Chicago overseeing all hedging operations and Chief Investment Officer for Nexus Risk Management globally.
Mr. Doersch has 30 years experience in investment management holding various leadership positions including serving on boards of asset management firms, overseeing teams of portfolio managers and playing a governing role for a professional association of quantitative portfolio managers.
Previously, Mr. Doersch co-led Wayne Hummer Asset Management LLC. Responsible for product design, Mr. Doersch led a major overhaul of the investment product line, upgraded staff substantially across key business functions, and opened new distribution channels to institutional and private investors. He successfully launched two new mutual funds that each achieved break-even in their second year. To gain scale in the face of the financial crisis, Mr. Doersch co-led the acquisition of another asset management firm with $1.2 billion in assets under management.
Prior to joining Wayne Hummer Asset Management as a Managing Director, Mr. Doersch founded Cognitive Investment Management LLC, an equity hedge fund firm specializing in market-neutral strategies based on "behavioral finance" research. Mr. Doersch managed all aspects of the business.
Before launching Cognitive Investment Management, Mr. Doersch was COO of another prominent investment management firm specializing in behavioral finance, Fuller & Thaler Asset Management. Prior to that, Mr. Doersch held several senior leadership roles within BARRA, Inc. for over a decade, including president and CEO of BARRA Rogers Casey Investment Consulting.
Mr. Doersch thrives in advanced research environments, particularly with behavioral finance strategies, multi-factor risk analysis, structuring optimal portfolios, and options pricing.
Mr. Doersch earned his MBA from the Harvard Business School, and two BA degrees from Stanford University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He currently serves on advisory boards of a leading portfolio analytics firm, Axioma Inc., a venture fund, and a global investment management firm in Switzerland. He also serves on the board of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance, and the International Center for Futures and Derivatives.
Victor S.F. Wong, FSA, FCIA, CFA, CRM is President of Nexus Risk Management Hong Kong responsible for managing all areas of the business and providing risk management and investment expertise to clients in the Greater China Region.
Mr. Wong has over 20 years experience in the financial services industry, including life insurance, pensions as well as corporate risks management. Most recently Mr. Wong was the President of Real Actuarial Consulting Ltd. in providing banking risk management services to Chinese banks and oversaw the ALM and Liquidity Risk Management systems development serving the Chinese market. Mr. Wong was previously the Associate Director of Mercer in both Canada and Hong Kong responsible for actuarial pension valuations for many multinational and local companies as well as serving as the Regional Leader of the Global Accounting Group, the Global Actuarial Group and the Global Technology Group.
Mr. Wong graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Joint Honors Bachelor of Mathematics and Statistics in Actuarial Science. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Mr. Wong is a past committee member of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong Interest Rate Committee and Pension Committee. He is a frequent speaker at industry gatherings in the Greater China Region.
